Traditional Sales vs. Interactive Sales

Going once, going twice, SOLD! Many companies sell many different things throughout our world economy. I don't think I had to tell many of you that. No matter where you look, there are items for sale. From your morning cup of coffee to buying your first house, someone is there to sell you. You may have been sold on crown molding, hardwood floors, or a venti instead of a tall coffee.

The thing about traditional sales is that there is something tangible being sold. As a salesperson, you can put something in your buyers hands. When it comes to interactive sales, however, you are selling your buyer on an idea or a concept. You are selling them on the idea of taking something that does not exist, an empty space, and filling it up with various pieces of strategy that will, in theory, grow their bottom line. You have to sell them on the ROI… Return on Imagination!

My job, as an interactive salesperson, is to destroy the boundaries of traditional marketing. I have to take all the preconceived notions business owners have regarding marketing and throw them out the window. It is my job to make it clear that a radio spot is a waste, tv commercials are exponentially more expensive than interactive marketing (and reaching exponentially less people), and lastly, a 4x4 ad in the phone book is good for starting a fire… and that's about it. The interactive sales process is a long fix. There are no short sales in my world. It can take weeks, months, and even years to break down misconception and guide a potential client down the road to successful interactive marketing. Sometimes, it takes giving something away just to prove to the client that a method of interactive marketing works.

The interactive world is not a commodity. Business owners do not yet see this industry as a must. They see it as a maybe, as a good subsidy to their traditional marketing. When in reality, interactive marketing is it. Interactive marketing is all there is, and all they should allocate any of their time or money to. Interactive marketing is the now and it is everything that is to come. Get on board, or get left behind.
