The New, New Twitter: What the updates mean to your marketing program

Twitter made a splash last week when they simultaneously released a redesigned version of their website and mobile app. The new design brings several improvements to Twitter’s already well-liked interface: Home, Connect, Discover, and Me tabs replace the Timeline, @Username, and Activity streams. In fact, these three tabs are now the only main navigation items within a Twitter profile.

The Home tab replaces the Timeline and houses Tweets from users that you follow. The Connect tab is the new place to go to keep up with all of your recent activity. Here you will see your @mentions, retweets (by you, and of your tweets), recent followers, and your tweets that others have favorited. The Discover tab is by far the most notable change and arguably most substantial improvement of Twitter’s new design. Here you can take an in-depth look at Twitter’s Top Stories. What makes the Discover tab interesting is that it choses top stories that are relevant to you, and the more you use it the better it gets!

Twitter’s recent updates were not limited to personal profiles. Companies received good news as well when Twitter announced that they will soon be releasing Brand Pages. When fully released, Brand Pages will come equipped with some great new features that brands will love. The most noticeable addition is expanded and fully customizable header images. In their header images brands can prominently display logos, slogans, and other branded material that could only previously be housed in their profile’s background image.

Brands will also have the ability to benefit from Featured Tweets on pages. Featured Tweets are a great way for brands to showcase a specific product, campaign, or promotion for an extended amount of time. Featured Tweets appear directly above normal company tweets. They can expand to show photos and videos that further showcase the brand.

Twitter is full of great new features that are definitely worth using. Brand Pages are not yet available to the masses, but when they arrive we would absolutely recommend updating your company’s profile. To check out the new version, download the latest version of Twitter’s mobile app.
