Improving Workplace Culture
If you were to take two businesses in the same industry, with the same amount of employees, having the same equipment and software, one will outperform the other; with the only noticeable differences being the unique personalities and the office space. So, how did each company derive the culture that has been imbedded into the organization?
Unfortunately, most companies open their doors with the culture of their organization being one of the last things they think about; most cultures come about by default. Founders and senior leadership values, behaviors and beliefs drive the initial organizational culture. As organizations grow, leaders start to realize how important it is to have a great work place culture in place; they start analyzing every aspect of the organization.
In most cases, they quickly realize that workplace culture can only be improved by improving the organizations current processes and systems. However, most efforts do not succeed due to the philosophy currently rooted into the already established workplace culture. So, changing the work place culture means encouraging change in your existing workplace behaviors and beliefs.
What does this mean? The first steps in developing a great company culture, is to lead by example.
The most effective leader will begin change by possessing changes within themselves. Once employees start recognizing change from their leaders, it becomes the responsibility of all employees to hold themselves accountable in implementing cultural change. As the change starts to become a standard, it is important to understand by adding just one new employee, it can create cultural shock; making it imperative to hire the right individuals to join your team.
No matter what position is being filled, an impact on your workplace culture will take place when a new employee walks through the door on their first day of work; it is up to you to make it positive. Do not hire an Interviewee based solely on their experience. When interviewing an individual, look deeper into whom that person is; based on all aspects of their life. Their attitude, values, goals, and practices will effect your organizations overall culture and if they can't match or improve upon the workplace culture that is being developed, you are creating a recipe for disaster.
Workplace culture is the holder of every company's success. Hire leaders to work within your culture and this will attract leaders to want to work for your organization; helping build upon your strong workplace culture. People will drive the performance of your business and it is the culture of your business that drives the performance of your people.
